Clown

The speaker describes being targeted with anger and physical threats for seeming different or being an outsider. At first, the lyrics sound hurt and bewildered: the speaker asks what they have done to deserve the hostility. That feeling shifts toward defiance. Rather than hiding or trying to fit in, the speaker declares a sense of freedom and challenges the aggressor.

The repeated image of being hit “because I’m strange” links the violence to rejection of difference. “Not from your town” suggests exclusion by a local group, though it may also stand more broadly for being treated as someone who does not belong. The accusation that a tattooed body hides the aggressor’s true self is a metaphor: the speaker implies that outward toughness conceals fear or insecurity. Calling the aggressor a “clown” is an insult that presents his bullying as foolish or performative.

The song’s anger is forceful, but its message is not entirely calm or consistent: the speaker condemns intimidation while also making threatening statements in return. This can be read as an emotional outburst, not necessarily a settled position. The lyrics suggest that both the outsider’s identity and the bully’s display of toughness are being challenged, while leaving the exact history between them unclear.
