Lyrics meaning

The speaker describes a home divided between the place where he lives now and the lowlands he still thinks of as home. He imagines that another person will eventually return to a peaceful life, away from fighting. The mood then turns from longing to the shared pain of battle, and finally to a sad farewell. Even though the soldiers have hurt one another, they have also stayed together when danger was greatest.

โ€œFields of destructionโ€ presents the battlefield as a landscape ruined by war. โ€œBaptisms of fireโ€ is an expression for a first experience of severe danger or violence; here, it suggests that combat has marked the soldiers deeply. The phrase โ€œbrothers in armsโ€ means fellow soldiers, but it also carries a sense of closeness and loyalty. โ€œBurn toโ€ do something means to want it intensely, so the hope of no longer burning to fight suggests a wish to leave that life behind.

The references to starlight and lines in a palm evoke ideas of fate or a future that seems already written. Yet the speaker does not simply accept war as inevitable: he calls people foolish for fighting those who have become like brothers. The farewell may reflect the possibility that someone will die, especially alongside the reminder that everyone must die, but it could also be a goodbye at the end of a shared ordeal. The lyrics leave that uncertainty open.
