Una carezza in un pugno

The speaker is separated from someone he loves and imagines thinking of her at midnight. At first, remembering her brings comfort: he holds a pillow and pictures her face in the dark. But this tender mood turns anxious when he wonders whether she might be thinking about another man. He feels lost, and his longing becomes anger or bitterness.

Several images show this change. The beloved seems to shine like a star, suggesting that she is precious but distant, something he can only imagine holding. The pillow held in his arms stands in for her absent body and offers a small form of comfort. Most strikingly, his hand changes from a place where she “shone” into a closed fist; the fist suggests hurt and anger. Yet the song imagines that a caress can emerge from it, turning hostility back into tenderness.

The speaker asks her to think of him for at least half an hour, as if this small act could soothe his jealousy. His words mix affection with possessiveness: saying “you are mine” may express intense attachment, but it can also sound controlling. The ending does not fully resolve that tension. The promised caress may signal hope that love will soften his anger, while the repeated fear of losing her leaves the relationship emotionally uncertain.
