The speaker begs someone not to leave, moving between regret, extravagant promises, hopeful arguments, and near-total self-erasure. At first, he says the past can be forgotten; then he offers an impossible future filled with riches and devotion. Later, he points to signs that love or life can return after seeming finished. By the end, his hope has narrowed: he says he will stay silent and accept even the smallest place in the other person’s life.

Several images make his promises vivid. “Pearls of rain” from a country where it never rains is a beautiful impossibility, suggesting that he will offer what cannot really be given. The old volcano that sends up fire suggests that passion may return after people think it has died. The image of becoming “the shadow of your shadow” expresses extreme submission: he would accept being barely noticed, as long as he can remain near.

The song can be heard as a portrait of desperate love, but its lavish promises may also feel unreal or even unsettling. The speaker’s claims that anything can be forgotten and that old love can flare again are pleas, not proof that reconciliation will happen. His final willingness to become almost invisible may be touching, but it also suggests the painful cost of holding on.
