Lyrics meaning
The song moves from the speaker’s longing for someone she cannot easily reach to a wider wish for peace and care between people. She wants to express her feelings, but struggles to make them understood, and worries that even giving everything she has may not be enough. The repeated hope that love could change the world sounds both tender and deeply frustrated.
Several images suggest how suffering crosses boundaries. “My island is under the wind” may picture a private, peaceful life exposed to outside troubles; even closed doors cannot keep other people’s cries away. A dried petal and tears point to loss and sorrow, while the child in a garden and flowers on a balcony offer small images of safety and ordinary beauty. The question about what weapons can answer the “countries of our fears” suggests that force may not address the fears behind conflict.
The song does not present love as a guaranteed solution. Its refrain imagines what might happen if people loved and gave more, but the questions and images of violence make that possibility feel uncertain. “If love were enough” can be heard as a hopeful wish, but also as a question: perhaps love matters greatly, while still being unable on its own to end every hardship.
