The sinking ship and its captain who stays aboard suggest stubbornly refusing to quit, even when disaster looks likely. “The house of three suns” may be a gambling place or a dreamlike refuge, while “the penny grave” hints that money disappears there.

The song does not explain exactly what the place is or why the man keeps playing, so these images can remain partly symbolic. He may be addicted to gambling, or the figure may represent anyone trapped by the desire to win everything immediately.
