Lyrics
I've never been much of a hero
But once long ago in my prime
I smuggled a cargo of fugitive men
Though reforming was their only crime
They were facing the noose of a hanged man
Or a stint in Tasmanian jails
The night we saved the Patriots
And the snow was in our sails
Aw, you can't trust this lake in December
Though that night we had no choice
If those red-coated men caught our seventy friends
By their necks they'd be happily hoist
So we slipped off in cover of darkness
Through the breakers, the blizzards, and gales
The night we saved the Patriots
And the snow was in our sails
Though the snow
Filled up the canvas we'd go
To the American side
By the shore
The wind blew right through you
Praise god hallelujah
Not one of us died
We struggled our way to Oswego
Our good ship was lost in the ice
On foot we set off, at Niagara we crossed
And a close call we had once or twice
We're not traitors or rebels or heroes
But we know when the government fails
And so we saved the Patriots
When the snow was in our sails
And so we saved the Patriots
When the snow was in our sails
