The engine’s steady throbbing is compared with a beating heart, linking the vehicle’s motion to intimacy. “Glass splinters” deep in the woman’s mind may suggest painful memories or thoughts that are hard to remove; the image presents her inner life as wounded, though the lyrics do not explain why.

The song leaves much uncertain.
