Lyrics meaning
The speaker rejects the idea of taking food from people who are already suffering, even though he sees wealth and plenty around him. The lyrics contrast a full cup with hunger: the speaker seems to have enough, but refuses to benefit from othersโ weakness. As the song develops, images of food and abundance become disturbing, and the repeated claim of going hungry sounds both deliberate and painful.
โStealing bread from the mouths of decadenceโ suggests taking from the rich or wasteful rather than from the poor. A โcupโ that is โoverfilledโ is an image of having more than enough. Meanwhile, food โon the tableโ contrasts with people whose mouths are choking, suggesting that resources exist but are not reaching those who need them. The phrase โfarming babiesโ is especially shocking and may imply that vulnerable people are being treated as products or exploited.
The speakerโs hunger may be literal, but it also seems moral: he would rather go without than feed on the powerless. Still, the lyrics do not explain exactly who is responsible for the suffering, or what โfarming babiesโ means. The repeated lines can sound like a firm refusal, but also like a troubling admission that choosing not to take part does not, by itself, end the injustice.
