Voices Carry

The lyrics describe someone who loves a man but feels unable to speak openly with him. At first, the speaker wonders what is on his mind and tries to hide her distress. As the song develops, the relationship seems more controlling: he wants her only sometimes, expects her to behave, and tells her to be quiet.
