Prisoner of Love

The speaker feels trapped by a love that is not returned in the same way. He waits for the woman’s attention and says he cannot love someone else, even though she is with another person. The mood is lonely and devoted, and it grows more desperate as he describes how much control this love seems to have over him.

The “chains” and “prisoner” are metaphors: he is not literally imprisoned, but feels unable to leave his feelings behind. Calling the woman “master of my fate” suggests that her choices seem to determine his happiness. Saying his life is “in her keeping” makes his dependence sound almost complete.

There is some ambiguity in how to understand this devotion. It may be a dramatic way of expressing heartbreak, rather than a literal belief that he has no freedom. At the same time, the lyrics present his loyalty as painful: he cares deeply, but she is unavailable, and he does not imagine a way forward. The song can therefore sound both romantic and troubling.
