Scarecrow

The song describes a scarecrow standing still in a field, surrounded by ordinary details such as birds, straw, wind, and mice. At first, the speaker seems to compare the scarecrow’s sadness with his own. The mood then softens: the scarecrow appears to accept his situation, and the speaker suggests that life may not be cruel after all.

The scarecrow’s lack of movement and thought makes him seem passive, almost separate from the busy world around him. The wind is one of the few things that can make him move, while the mice carry on below him. Saying he is “resigned to his fate” means he has stopped resisting what has happened to him. His stillness can suggest helplessness, but it may also look like calm acceptance.

The lyrics leave room for different readings. The scarecrow may be a simple image of someone who feels stuck or lonely, and the speaker may recognize his own sadness in it. Yet the final description does not make acceptance sound entirely bleak: perhaps the scarecrow is content, or perhaps the speaker is trying to comfort himself by imagining that he is. The song does not explain why either figure feels sad.
