The year was 1932
We had to leave Moscow
My friends and I together
No one could say much now
A fear was in the city
The times had really changed
And the man of steel got away with murder again
The moonlit night was bitter
Tears freezing in our eyes
Our movements getting quicker
As we left without goodbyes
We were writers, we were poets
We were active on our path
Sometimes it led you to take flight
Night train to Leningrad
Night train to Leningrad
The truth was all around us
But it just could not be told
Secret back room discussions
Led us to a move so bold
Some friends had been arrested
Protesting state affairs
We chose to flee to Finland
And take our chances there
Red soldiers round the station
We slipped into the crowd
And the private conversations
Seemed to echo right out loud
Falling silent to the rumors
Of Stalin going mad
We threw our bags and climbed aboard
Night train to Leningrad
Night train to Leningrad
Night train to Leningrad
ย
It sounds somewhat romantic
And noble to the cause
But our quest for free expression
Couldn't tolerate the laws
So if you dream of freedom
When days are ironclad
It just may lead you to take flight
Night train to Leningrad
Night train to Leningrad
Night train to Leningrad
Night train, night train
Night train, night train
