Lyrics meaning

The speaker presents himself as an outdated outsider in a world that has become more comfortable and conventional. He feels unsure of his direction, and his friends seem to have settled into ordinary middle-class life. Yet he insists on continuing in his own way, turning frustration into stubborn energy.

The steam train is the central image: it suggests an older, rougher way of life, powered by effort and leaving soot behind. Calling himself the โ€œlastโ€ train makes him sound like a remnant from another age, while โ€œliving in a museumโ€ implies that he is preserved as an object from the past rather than fully belonging in the present. โ€œHuff and puffโ€ echoes a train working hard and suggests that he will keep pushing forward.

The lyrics mix pride with loneliness and irritation. The speaker may be celebrating independence, but he also sounds trapped by the very identity he claims: he is โ€œokayโ€ in the museum, yet peaceful living drives him โ€œinsane.โ€ The song can therefore be read both as a playful portrait of a rebel who refuses to change and as a more wistful expression of someone who fears becoming irrelevant.
