Lyrics meaning
The speaker is addressing someone who seems to have moved away and begun a new relationship. He sounds jealous and anxious, repeatedly warning her not to speak to the other man because he believes she will be used. The emotion grows more urgent as he hears rumors and asks questions, but his concern is mixed with possessiveness: he calls her โmy girlโ even as he admits others say she no longer is.
The โgolden ruleโ here means a basic lesson or rule of behavior, turned into a warning about strangers. Calling the new man a โslick continental dudeโ and โDon Juanโ presents him as charming and possibly deceptive, though these labels reflect the speakerโs view rather than proven facts. The French phrases express romantic desire and affection; the speakerโs question, โWhatโs he sayinโ?โ suggests he feels excluded and threatened by their conversation.
The lyrics leave the relationshipโs reality uncertain. The new man may indeed be exploiting her, as the speaker fears, but the speaker may also be interpreting her independence as betrayal. His repeated plea can sound protective, controlling, or both. The song therefore holds two possibilities at once: a warning about a smooth-talking stranger and a portrait of someone struggling to accept that a partner may have chosen someone else.
