Lyrics meaning

The singer longs to marry Clifton Clowersโ€™s daughter, who lives on a mountain guarded by her father. At first, he recognizes the danger and says he will risk his life to reach her. His loneliness and conviction that their love is being unfairly blocked make him increasingly determined, until he declares that he will climb the mountain and take the girl. The mood shifts from yearning and caution to bold, even reckless resolve.

The mountain represents both a real barrier between the lovers and the obstacles standing in the singerโ€™s way. The warning that Clifton is โ€œhandy with a gun and a knifeโ€ makes the danger vivid and gives the song a humorous, exaggerated sense of threat. Saying the daughterโ€™s lips are โ€œsweeter than honeyโ€ is a familiar way to express intense attraction, while the bears and birds supposedly warning her father make the mountain seem like a place protected by nature itself.

The ending is open to interpretation. โ€œIโ€™ll get the one I loveโ€ may sound like a promise to overcome the fatherโ€™s resistance, but โ€œtake the girl I loveโ€ can also feel troubling because it treats her as someone to claim rather than someone whose choice matters. The lyrics do not tell us what she wants or whether the singer succeeds, so his determination can be heard as romantic courage, comic bravado, or possessiveness.
