No. 13 Baby

The lyrics sketch a vivid, somewhat mysterious portrait of a woman and the people and activities around her. The speaker seems fascinated by her appearance and presence, but the repeated “I’m in a state” suggests being emotionally unsettled or overwhelmed. The song moves between close-up details of the woman and a lively scene next door, without explaining exactly how they connect.

Several images make the portrait feel specific: her long hair and pocket comb suggest attention to her appearance, while the “black tear” and the number 13 tattoo give her an unconventional, striking look. The choir and songs brought from the shore hint at family or community traditions. The image of people gathering around a fire to cook a pig suggests a shared event, though the lyrics do not say what the occasion is.

The repeated contrast between “blue eyes” and “brown eyes” may express a preference or attraction, but its meaning is not fully clear from the words alone. Likewise, “I’m in a state” could mean confusion, excitement, or simply strong emotional intensity. Rather than telling a complete story, the lyrics leave these details open, creating an impression of fascination mixed with uncertainty.
