A White Sport Coat

The singer has dressed carefully for a dance, expecting to go with someone who once promised to attend with him. That person has changed their mind, leaving him alone and heartbroken. The song moves from the excitement of getting ready to a repeated sense of disappointment and loneliness.

The white sport coat and pink carnation are specific details of his outfit, but they also show how much effort he made for the occasion. A “blue, blue mood” means he feels very sad; the color blue is commonly associated with sadness in English. “Someone else will hold my dreams” suggests that another person may now share the hopes and romantic future he had imagined with his date.

The lyrics do not explain why the other person changed their mind, or whether the singer will recover from the disappointment. The repeated lines make his sadness feel immediate and hard to escape, while the playful “doo-wa” sounds contrast with the unhappy story. That contrast may make the song feel both light in sound and genuinely wistful in meaning.
